Helga Elizabeth Soltis, 58, longtime Minot resident, died December 30, 2003 at Trinity Hospital after a lengthy illness.

Helga was born in Fuerth, Bavaria, Germany to Emil Bonnet and Anneliese (Winkler) Bonnet. Her mother married Fred Dreier in September of 1948. Fred was in the service at that time. In December of 1948, the family consisting of Fred, Anneliese, Renate and Helga came to Minot. There was a large city celebration when the two little German girls, their mother and new father stepped out of the plane.

Helga attended the Minot public school system and graduated in 1962. She was very active in DECA, Pep Club, German Club and was a wonderful dancer. She always said her favorite activity was dancing and hanging out with Jim.

Helga married Jim Soltis on December 29, 1962 in Minot. Helga worked at many jobs to help a young struggling family. She worked at Northern Bottling Company, took in ironing and any job that was available. Her passion was animals. She was one of the original founders of the Souris Valley Humane Society and was very active in dog shows, raising dogs and taking in every stray she found. She was a member of Our Redeemer's Lutheran Brethren Church, Minot, where the entire family found comfort and peace in times of need.

Helga was a very faithful friend. To her family and friends her name was "Hegs." She found great joy in her grandchildren and always had a patient ear and time to spend with them. Her many friends will miss the honesty and love she had for all.

She was very good at decorating and had an eye for making almost anything look beautiful. She loved plants and flowers and spent countless hours with this hobby. Helga rarely missed her weekly trip to the Minot Public Library to feed her passion for reading.

Memorials are preferred to Our Redeemers Christian School Scholarship Fund or to the Souris Valley Humane Society.

Helga was preceded in death by her father, Emil Bonnet; stepfather, Fred Dreier and sister, Renate, (Bonnet) Keating.
