John died suddenly of heart disease at his home in Kilauea, Kauai, Wednesday, March 8, 1899. He had complained of chest pains the Friday before. He attended Iolani School on Oahu and the Normal School in Honolulu, to become a teacher. On graduating, he became a teacher at Kilauea School on Kauai. He was well and favorably known.
