Ernest was a lifelong member of the UMWA and retired from coal mining after 42 years working underground. Most of his mining career was spent working for the New River Company and Westmoreland Coal Company, both in Raleigh County.
The father of two daughters, Mary Louise and Penny Louise, he was also a kind and loving uncle to many nieces and nephews.
