Widowed at age 32, she worked various jobs such as doing laundry, cleaning houses, midwifing and as a cook at the Greyhound Bus Terminal in Beckley in order to support her family. Mary raised her four daughters, Margaret, Juanita, Marie and Clara Lee alone and taught them her strong work ethic.
During the great depression, Mary raised a large garden, chickens and hogs at her home in Sun, Fayette County, WV, where she fed not only herself and her children, but other family members as well. Even after moving her family to Beckley in 1934, Mary continued to raise and produce a large garden annually, including apples for old-fashioned kettle-made applebutter. She kept many different kinds of animals throughout the years including geese, turkeys, ducks, chickens, a parrot and a crow she raised from a hatchling and taught to talk.
Mary was an excellent cook, seamstress and quilter. She had many grandchildren and greatgrandchildren who love and miss her still.
