Richard Vernon Barber, 79, of Russellville, died Sunday, Feb. 13, 2011, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Little Rock. He was born April 1, 1931, at Dell, Arkansas to Burnie Calvin and Audra Mae Garrett Barber. He was a retired security guard for Arkansas Tech University, a U. S. Air Force veteran, was a Mason for many years and was a Baptist. He enjoyed woodworking. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Melissa Gail Barber; three brothers, Joe Barber, J. C. Barber, and Dennis Barber; four sisters, Flora Brock, Ruth McClanahan, Grant Varnes and Bertie Staples; and a granddaughter, Stacey Barber.
Survivors include his wife, Pauline Sheets Shockley Barber; a son and his wife, David and Debbie Barber of Dardanelle; two daughters and their husbands, Kay and Johnny Keys of Dardanelle, and Peggy Sue and Larry Underwood of Pottsville; a step-son and his wife, Brent and Tracey Shockley of Houston, Texas; four step-daughters and their husbands, Lina and Bobby Ramey of Danville, Janie and Joe Jirinec of Russellville, Hazel Leslie of Little Rock and Nancy and Jeff Holm of Grand Forks, N.D.; a sister and her husband, Rose and James Bissell of Nashville; 8 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren, 8 step grandchildren and 5 step great grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2011, at the First Free Will Baptist Church in Dardanelle, officiated by the Rev. Jarred Higginbotham. Burial will be in Brearley Cemetery at Dardanelle, by Shinn Funeral Service of Russellville.
Pallbearers:
Active - Brian Keys, Perry Keys, Kyle Keys and Boyce Barber.
Honorary - Joe Jirinec and Bobby Ramey.
The family will receive friends from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m., Tuesday at the funeral home.
