Alva, called "Nettie" by her parents, was a daughter of Robert and Catherine Thompson, who were natives of Scotland. They settled in Portage, where their daughter met and married Harry A Story, who founded Story's Business College there.

After their marriage in 1895, Alva taught at the college with Harry. She retired to raise their children, Eileen and John Robert. Eileen married Bronno Mulder and had two children. John Robert was never married and faithfully cared for his mother after his father's death.
