He [Charles] lived on the homestead at Goguac Prairie near Battle Creek, Michigan, and carried on the farm. He also entered into several business enterprises and acquired large wealth by this means - all by honorable methods. Liberal during his life, he also bequeathed considerable sums to public causes at his death. The Y.M.C.A. grounds and building, a public library building, endowment of a chair of Latin and Literature in the Baptist College at Kalamazoo, Michigan, and a fund for Home Missions were some of his benefactions.
