Eagle Lake Boy Dies After Crash Near Here Sunday
Cpl. W. B.[sic] Austin of Eagle Lake died in the Bell Hospital, Columbus, Monday of injuries received when his car collided early Sunday with a car occupied by two negroes on Highway 3, a half mile east of Vasek's store at Borden. Austin's head was crushed when helpers picked him up. Five others were injured.
Other occupants of Austin's car taken to the hospital at Columbus were J. L. Hammond of Houston, back injuries; Robert Leadnicky of Houston, broken leg; R. E. Leininger of Muskogee. Okla., lacerations on back and broken ribs.
The accident happened at about 2:30 Sunday morning. The soldiers were returning to their corps when they ran into the other car, which had turned out to avoid hitting an unlighted trailer stopped immediately in front of them. Two Houston negroes, Burrell Jackson and Bert Henson. also were injured.
Austin, a second-year volunteer, will be buried in Eagle Lake [Lakeside Cemetery] with a military funeral. Surviving are his parents. Mr. and Mrs. Tome E. Austin of Eagle Lake; two sisters. Mrs. J. M. Colburn and Mrs. J. M. Clark, and a brother. Corkdell Austin of Houston. Columbus Funeral Home ambulance took the injured and dead to Columbus.
