Elijah's father was the first minister of the Sixth Street Baptist Church in Cincinnati, and his maternal grandfather was Rev. Dr. William Staughton, a prominent Baptist minister who became the first president of Columbian College, now the George Washington University in Washington, DC.
According to the Cincinnati, Ohio Directory of 1890-91, Elijah W. Lynd was a bookkeeper for the Globe Rolling Mill at the time of his death. Elijah had been suffering from influenza and his death, according to the death certificate, was caused by pneumonia.
Survivors included his widow, Theresa Gordon Lynd, a son Elijah Waring Lynd and a daughter, Eliza Leonora "Lila" Lynd Folger.
