George was by trade a carpenter and mason; also a baker and confectioner. He worked in a bakery along with his father, his cousin, Hiram D. Smith, and others in the family in Ridgeway, Orleans, NY in a store owned by his aunt Laura (Warner) and her husband, Eugene Smith.

CIVIL WAR veteran: At the age of 23, he enlisted in the NY 17th Volunteer Battery, 17th NY Light Artillery, Orleans Battery 17th at Ridgeway, Orleans, NY. Mustered out with battery on 7/12/1865 at Richmond, VA.

George was serving in the same Battery as his cousin, Hiram-8 "H.D." Smith, son of Laura-7 Warner and her husband Eugene Smith.

Missing Photograph: Ilah wrote in her letter of 9/8/1992: "I looked through my pictures and I found one on a large cardboard that years ago they mounted pictures on. It's a group picture, but I don't know all of them and some I have forgotten. My grandmother and grandfather [George Edward and Mary (Hooker) Warner] are in the center and my sister Jean is standing between them in front. She must have been 3 or so, and she has her hands in a shaggy muff." Will this important photo ever be found?
