Son of Andrew Justus and Hannah Gilreath. He was born in Henderson county, NC and was a brother to William, Wilson, Isabella, Walker Sevier and Austin. He enlisted in Company I of the NC 16th infantry regiment and was serving in Valley Mountain, VA when he succumbed to disease.

"Heritage of Henderson Co Vol I, page 29 top left column - narrates a letter received from brother William. The letter goes on to say that "younger brother Mitchell was very sick with the measles. The letter dated 18 August 1864 was from Big Springs, Virginia. Mitchell died there at age 18."
Written by Annie Laurie Carson"

A prior source gives year of death as 1861 but the latter source appears more reliable.
