Father Charles F. Adams, O.F.M., an assistant at Holy Cross Parish in Callicoon from 1996 until 1999 when he moved to St. Anthony's Friary in St. Petersburg, Fla., d. at the Friary on Sunday, Dec 3, 2000. He was 87 years of age.
The s/o the late Edward C. and Elizabeth J. Erb Adams, he was b. June 22, 1913, in Rochester.
Father Charles graduated from St. Bonaventure University in 1934 and taught chemistry at the university until he entered the Franciscan Noviciate in Paterson, N.J., in 1936. He was simply professed as a Franciscan in 1937 and ordained to the priesthood on Oct 13, 1940, in Washington by Bishop Corrigan.
From 1941 until 1952, Father Charles taught chemistry at Siena College in Loudonville. In 1952 he became assistant chemistry professor at St. Bonaventure and remained there until 1973 when he became pastor of St. Peter's and St. Ann's Ches near Croghan.
From 1978 to 1983, he worked in several parishes in Rochester and from 1983 to 1996, he was an assistant at Assumption Parish in Fairport. He came to Callicoon in 1996.
As a spiritual director for Catholic Travel Office, Father Charles traveled extensively in the Holy Land, Europe and Asia. He served as Civil Air patrol chaplain for many years and rose to the rank of major. He was famous for his salutation of "peace and joy" as he greeted all that he met. He is survived by a niece and a nephew.
Friends may pay their respects at Holy Cross Ch in Callicoon on Friday from 2-4 p.m. and on Sat. from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.
A Funeral Mass will be offered at 11 a.m. Sat. with the Provincial Minister for the Holy Name Province Father John Felice, O.F.M. officiating.
Burial will be made in Holy Cross Cem. in Callicoon.
Funeral arrangements were made by the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home in Callicoon.
