Military. He rose to the rank of Major General. Surrendered in September 1944 with over 19.600 men at Beaugency to Gen Robert C. Macon. For his "dangerous and false sense of humanity," he was sentenced (in absence) to death on March 7th, 1945 by the military court of Torgau. As one of the few high-ranking German military personnel he was exonerated after denazification proceedings.
