Alice Zaback was born Sept. 28, 1908, in Bergen, to John and Petra (Gunderson) Zaback. She was raised in Bergen and attended rural schools in that area and later attended Lincoln School in Minot and then Velva High School.
Alice married N.G. Abel on Nov. 15, 1928, in Velva. They lived in Fargo, Bend, Ore., Verendrye and then moved back to Karlsruhe. Along with raising her family, Alice worked as a postal clerk in Karlsruhe for many years. Her husband died on May 6, 1981.
Alice moved to the Chateau Apartments in Minot in 1982. In 1997 she moved into Edgewood Vista in Minot, where she lived until 2006, when she entered the Souris Valley Care Center in Velva. From there she joined her loved ones in heaven.
Alice had a great love for music, sewing and crafts. Alice was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Karlsruhe and was active there in the Confraternity of Christian Mothers. While living in Minot, she was a member of St. Leo's Catholic Church.
Those who shared in her life: children, Shirley (Clem) Leier, Velva, Darlene (Joe) Boechler, of Moses Lake, Wash., Russell (Loretta) Abel, Fargo, Janet (Denny) Hildebrand, Mandan, and Carolyn (George) Bischof, Minot; 18 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; 17 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Alice was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; brothers, Casper, Arthur and Waldemer; and sisters, Irene Gefroh and Delores Bossert.
Funeral: Monday, Feb. 21, 2011, at 10:30 a.m., in Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Karlsruhe.
Visitation and vigil prayer service: Visitation will be Sunday, Feb. 20, from 1 to 5 p.m., with the vigil prayer service at 5 p.m., both at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.
