Anthropologist. He was a prominent student of Franz Boas, the illustrious founder of American anthropology. Lowie became the leading expert on the cultures of North American Indians, devoting extensive research to the Crow tribe. He founded "salvage ethnography," the rapid collection of data from cultures close to extinction and emphasized the importance of cultural relativism. He published extensively, including the books, The Crow Indians, Indians of the Plains, and Primitive Society.
