Andrea Joan (Reule) Butler, 74, of Springfield died Monday, February 21, 2011 at St. John's Hospital.

She was born March 7, 1936, in Evanston, IL to William and Lucille Weber Reule. She married Homer Lee Butler in 1967. He preceded her in death in 1997. Andrea and Homer had a son, Paul Christopher Butler, who died in 1986.

She is survived by her son, Jeremy Lee (wife, Jennifer) Butler of Washington, D.C.; husband, Lynn Miller (married January 5, 2002); stepsons, Jeffrey (wife, Charlotte) Miller of Washington, D.C, and Craig (wife, Linda) Miller and grandchildren Konnor and Zelina all of Redmond, WA; sister Elizabeth Reule (husband, Karl) Gohlke of Albany, NY; and nieces and nephews.

Andrea was a graduate of the University of Rochester and later attended the University of Illinois, College of Medicine, at Peoria, graduating as a nurse practitioner. She served as a nurse in the Peace Corps in Togo, West Africa, and later as a staff member in Tanzania, Niger and Chad and then in Washington D.C. during the 1960s. She and Homer moved to Springfield in 1970 where he was Assistant Dean, Dean and Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs at Sangamon State University.

Andrea initially worked as a nurse at Memorial Medical Center and taught nursing at Sangamon State University. She later moved to the Cass County Health Dept. as Director of Nursing and a Nurse Practitioner and then to the IL Dept. of Public Health as a maternal-child health nurse consultant. Andrea was a long-term member of Westminster Presbyterian Church where she helped found the Westminster Cooperative Preschool and served on numerous committees. After being diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, she helped establish the Springfield Parkinson's Support Group. She served on the Springfield Race Relations Committee, the Sister Cities Program, and enjoyed travelling internationally. She is fondly remembered by friends and family as a loving and supportive person of great empathy.

A Memorial Ceremony will be held on Friday, February 25, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 533 S. Walnut St., Springfield, with Dr. Lonnie H. Lee officiating.

Private family burial was held at Stout Cemetery.
