Jans was born in Hanover, Germany in 1850. His parents were also born in Hanover. Records show he immigrated to the US in 1870 and became a naturalized citizen.
At the time of the 1880 census Jans was living alone at Slate Creek, Josephine County in rural southern Oregon where he was a gold miner. He was 30 years old and single. He was listed as "James H. Aden."
On 8/3/1902 Jans was admitted to the Oregon State Hospital, a residential facility in Salem, Oregon for the treatment of people with mental illness.
In the census of 1910 he was an "inmate" at the Oregon State Hospital. He was listed as "John H Aden." The census of 1920 also included him as a patient at the state hospital. He died there on 10/7/1922 of cerebral arteriosclerosis.
