Son of Lyman Walton Bunnell and Ruth (Tingley) Bunnell was a long time resident of Fairbanks, Fairbanks North Star Borough, Alaska. He married Mary Anna Kline on July 24, 1901. He was the Democrat candidate for U.S. Delegate to the US Congress from the Alaska territory in 1914. He served as a district judge for the Fourth Judicial Division of the Alaska Territory from 1914 to 1921. He also served as the University of Alaska's first president from 1921 to 1949. This stint as president began when the school was called the Alaska Agricultural College and School of Mines and continued when the school's name was changed to the University of Alaska. He died from the results of a heart attack. The Bunnell Building, located at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, is named in his honor.
