Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 23, 1999, at the Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home, Manitowoc. Rev. Steven Olson will officiate. It was Gerda’s wish to be cremated and to have her cremains buried next to her husband at Knollwood Memorial Gardens.
She was born July 24, 1915, in Leipzig, Germany. Her parents were the late Charles and Marie Kaesekamp Hempel. Gerda was educated in Germany and attended the Max Reinhard Drama School, in Hollywood, Calif. She married Ira L. Place on August 10, 1943, in Manitowoc. Mr. Place preceded her in death on January 14, 1976. For many years she was a resident of Manitowoc. In 1978, she moved to Naples, Fla., where she spent most of her time, except for the summers when she came back to Manitowoc. Finally, in 1992, she decided to return to Manitowoc to live permanently. Gerda was a former member of First Lutheran Church, Manitowoc, the Branch River Country Club, the Junior Service League, and Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.
Survivors include one daughter, Sandra Place, Santa Fe., N.M.; other relatives and friends also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
Friends may call at the Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home, from 10 a.m. Saturday until the time of service at 11 a.m.
