Obituary: George W. Ness, 89, of 61 Livingston Ave., formerly of 28 Creek Road, Gerry, died at 5:45 a.m. Friday (March 6, 1992) in Veterans Administration Medical Center, Erie, PA. He was born April 3, 1902, in Lake Preston, S.D., a son of Olaf and Kristi Oleson Ness. Ness was employed by the International Association of Bridge Structural and Ornamental Iron Workers Local No. 348 of Erie. He was a veteran of World War I., and served with the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Arkansas. During World War II, he was with the 103rd Naval Construction Battalion, which was responsible for building airstrip for the Enola Gay Airplane that bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki. He received the good conduct medal, the national defense medal, the overseas medal, and the Asiatic the theater of operations medal. Surviving are his wife, Aletha Bascom Ness, who he married April 5, 1983, in Polson, MT; a daughter, Gerrie Person of Lakewood: two grandchildren; William Doty and Denise Mancari, both of Jamestown; three great-grandchildren; three stepsons, Charles Hodges of Celoron, Patrick Hodges of Gerry, and Michael Hodges of Marietta, Ohio; eight stepgrandchildren; Michelle Nordine and Michael Hodges, both of Celoron, Shawn, William G. and Timothy Hodges, all of Gerry, Stephanie Hodges of Marietta, Ohio, Roy Hodges and William R. Hodges, both of Auburn, Calif. He was preceded in death by his first wife Sylvia Carothers Ness, who died in 1960; a stepson, William H. Hodges, who died in 1978; two brothers; Oscar and James Ness; and four sisters; Dora Ross, Elizabeth Reid, Olge Weise and Harriet Pitts. Visitation will not be observed. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Hubert Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
