Alvred Bayard Nettleton (1838-1911) - Find a Grave Memorial

Civil War Union Army Brevet Brigadier General. He was a successful publisher-editor of the "Dailey Register", "Chicago Advance", plus managing editor of the "Philadelphia Inquirer" and founder of the "Minneapolis Tribune". Answering the Union's call to arms, he enlisted as a Private in the 2nd Ohio Volunteer Cavalry. Recognized for his leadership abilities, he rose through the ranks to Colonel in command of the 2nd Ohio Cavalry and lead his men in 72 battles. For his service to the Union, he was brevetted Brigadier General of US Volunteers on March 13, 1865. After the war, he returned to his journalist interests and served as a manager for the Northern Pacific Railroad. He also served as Assistant Secretary of the United States Treasury from 1890 to 1893, and was Acting Secretary of the Treasury after the death of Secretary William Windom. General Nettleton died at age 73 in Chicago, Illinois.
