George Francis Snow was the eighth child of ten children born to Anthony Snow (1799-1880) and his wife Lydia Gilford Snow (1801-1886). His father worked in the leather tanning business in Peabody, Essex Co., MA. George grew up in nearby Danvers. He married Catherine Fidelia Flint (1839-1890) on April 15, 1863 in Lynn, MA. The couple lived in Salem and George commuted by rail into Boston where he worked as a bookkeeper at Freeman's National Bank.
"In January 1874 occurred the Great Fire of Boston in which half the business section was wiped out, Grandfather Snow's bank being in the path of the flames. The bank reopened offices in an unheated warehouse on Atlantic Avenue. There George Francis Snow developed the cold that went into pneumonia and Quick Consumption."

George left a young wife and two small children: Walter Flint (b. 1864) and Grace Allen (b. 1866).
