Lt Col Luikart was Executive Officer of 515th Coast Artillery Corps while posted in the Philippines during the 1941 Imperial Japanese invasion. He later assumed command of the 200th Coast Artillery Corps. which was later surrendered on Bataan on 9 Apr. 1942. Lt Col John C. Luikart survived the Bataan Death March and later the sinking of the "Hell Ship" Oryoku Maru. From the San Fernando POW Camp,John was loaded onto the Hell Ship Enoura Maru. The Enoura Maru was a livestock transport and the holds were not cleaned out when POWs were transported aboard her, nor was it marked as a POW carrier. The Enoura Maru was heading to Moji, Japan, but stopped at
Takao, Formosa (now Taiwan) for repairs. American Forces launched an attack at Takao while the Enoura Maru was there. Some of the POWs killed during the bombing were burned, buried in mass graves on Formosa, or buried at sea.
