A lifelong resident of Bay City, he was born here July 4, 1921, was a member of Visitation church, and attended Visitation and T. L. Handy High schools.
Enlisting in the army Feb. 22, 1944, the serviceman went overseas in September, 1944, and was killed in action on Leyte Island in the Philippines. He was a member of the amphibious unit of the 96th Division.
He received the Distinguished Service Cross for "Extraordinary heroism in action on Nov. 14, 1944."
The citation read: "When the platoon in which Pvt. Tardiff was servicing as an ammunition bearer was engaged in the assault of a heavily fortified ridge position, the advance was halted by intense machine gun and rifle fire. Picking up a light machine gun, Pvt. Tariff charged the enemy position, firing as he went. He destroyed one machine gun and with complete disregard for his personal safety continued to deliver withering fire from an exposed position until he fell mortally wounded. Electrified by his actions, the platoon moved forward and destroyed the enemy."

Surviving besides his mother are two brothers, John (Joe) Tardiff of Essexville, and Bernard Tardiff, of Waukegan, Ill.; four sisters, Helen (Elwood) Smith and Patricia (Harry) Madol, both of Bay City; Adorene (John) Siegal, of Detroit; and Madelyn (Chester) Skonisezny of Port Huron.
