MERCER, Pa. (AP) — Rowland B. Mahany, who served 24 years in the state House and Senate representing Crawford and Mercer counties, has died. He was 95.

Mahany, a Republican who served as Senate majority leader for six years, died Sunday in Ft. Myers, Fla., after a short illness, said his son, Richard B. Mahany of Mercer.

Rowland grew up in Saegertown and practiced law in Titusville from the late 1920s until 1972. He served in the state House of Representatives from 1942 to 1946, when he began serving in the Senate, a stint that lasted 20 years.

Mahany helped to draft legislation modernizing the court system, said E Richard Thomas, Crawford County's senior judge, whose father was a friend of Mahany's. "He was a very honorable attorney," said Victor Kinnunen, a Titusville lawyer who knew Mahany both through his parents and as a colleague. Kinnunen said Mahany saw his practice more as a means of serving his clients' needs than as a business.
