W. C. Fess, Retired Employe Of Locomotive Works, Dies

William Charles Fess, 92-year-old former railroader and for 43 years an employe of the old Lima Locomotive Works, was found dead at noon yesterday in his home, 744 S. Main St.

Death was believed to be due to a heart attack.

Born Feb. 12, 1863, in Medina County, he came to Lima in 1883 and worked as a fireman and engineer for 19 years on the old Lake Erie & Western Railroad.

He later was a boiler fireman for the old Page Organ Co. before joining the locomotive works. As a messenger for the firm, he delivered rod and Shay locomotives to 35 of the 48 states. He retired at 85 in 1948. For the last 15 years of his employment he was retained as a stationary boiler fireman.

He was a member of Grace Methodist Church, the church's Loyal Men's Class and the 25-Year-Club at B-L-H. Last week he was awarded a life membership in Solar Lodge No. 783 (IOOF) for 50 years of activity in the organization.

His wife, Christina, died in 1948.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Guy Butler, with whom he lived at 744 S. Main St., and Mrs. George Lutman, 617 S. Elizabeth St.; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Odd Fellows memorial services will be at 8:30 p.m. Friday in the Siferd & Son Funeral Home and regular services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Grace Methodist Church. The body will be taken to the church at noon Saturday. The Rev. Vernon Van Buren will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be E. L. and Calvin Neiswander, C. H. Pool, William Kleinoder, Roy Mooney and C. N. Alexander.
