Betty Fern Awbrey, 73, of Novato, Calif., and formerly of Aztec, passed on at 4:44 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 11, 2011, in Manteca, Calif., from complications of uterine cancer. Born in Rising Star, Texas, she was the proud daughter of E. E. Watson and Bertie Mae Watson.

Her family relocated to Aztec, where Betty spent her high school years playing saxophone in the band and making great memories with friends. She married James J. "Jim" Shryock. They were later divorced.

She was passionate about music and dancing and her happy marriage to Garland Awbrey, of Andrews, Texas.

She was preceded in death by four grandchildren.

She was a warm, loving big sister to Margie Neitzel of Texas, Emery E. "Chigger" and Judi Watson of Bloomfield and Coy and Cindi Watson of Aztec; beloved mother to Joey and Naomi, Johnny and Lisa, Lonny and Vicki, Shawnie Shryock and Gina Antenucci; gracious and caring stepmother to Doug, Joy, Brenda and Teresa Awbrey, Doug and Shellie Tuckett; grandmother to 15; and great-grandmother to many.

Known for her beautiful smile and non-judgmental way, she will be missed everyday. Religion helped her be strong while she was here; God gave her hands to hold when she left. Her family will carry forward her wisdom and grace as we walk this path without her.
We love you, Momma.
