US Congressman, New Hampshire Governor. He served during World War I in the United States Marine Corps. He was elected to represent New Hampshire's 2nd District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1945 to 1947. He then served as Governor of New Hampshire from 1949 to 1953. He later served as Chief Assistant to President Dwight D. Eisenhower, but had to resign his post after allegations that he had accepted gifts from a friend who had sought his help in governmental favors.
