Clifton Ray Laughter, 82, of New Holstein, died June 26, 2009 at his niece's home in Wisconsin. Cliff was born on April 27, 1924 in Olive Branch Mississippi to Hosea A. & Willie Mae (Sisk) Laughter. He picked cotton on the farm until he was old enough to join the Navy in 1942 as a cook. He retired in 1963 and was in the reserves until 1972. He sailed on the seas in World War II on the following ships: USS Frank, Saufley, Rockwell and USS Mitchell making their home port in San Francisco, California. After retiring he was employed as a butcher in Southern California. Cliff met his bride Phyllis Pruitt at the check out counter. They were married in 1970. Cliff enjoyed helping people out, panning for gold (gettin' rich), gardening (growin' the biggest), flirting with women, practical jokes, and most of all fishing. Cliff decided in April 2008 to hang everything up and move in with his niece in Wisconsin. His body wasn't as spry as before and made fishing difficult, but he found a new ""lil"" fishing buddy, Christopher Holly, who was always there to help. Cliff is survived by his brother-in-law Victor Haese (Bulah) and family of Manitowoc, a step-daughter Kandace Schmitz (Chuck) of WA, and numerous nieces and nephews. Special recognition to nieces and nephews: Anita Hill (Dennis) of New Holstein, Becky Holly (John) of Manitowoc, Patsy Hammitt (Mike) and family of FL, Sara German and family of FL, Jack Hawkins and family of ID, Floyd Hawkins (Ellen) of Brillion. Great nieces and nephews: Jennifer Hill & Rob Kerner of IL, Jeremy Hill and family of Kiel, Isleigh German of FL, Christopher, Nicole, Nathan, and Jacob Holly of Manitowoc. Preceded in death by his parents, wife Phyllis, brother Robert Laughter of FL, sisters Dorothy Hawkins of ID, and Bulah Haese of Reedsville.
