Alfred served in the Army during World War II in the South Pacific, where he was injured during battle at Bougainville Island.
After retiring from the service, Mr. Ackerman became involved in the grain elevator business for over 35 years. He also owned and raced standard-bred race horses for years. Alfred was also an active member of the House of Prayer Church in Albion. He was also a member of Mount Carmel and Carmel American Legions - serving as past commander. Alfred was also a life member of Mount Carmel Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Alfred is survived by his wife, two sons, and five grandchildren.
