Martha married her brother-in-law, James D. Taber, at Geneseo, Henry County, Illinois on 15 Sep 1841 shortly after Taber's first wife(Martha's older sister Sarah) and mother of six children died about 1840. The new couple produced an additional nine children over the next 20 years although five of the nine died in early infancy. Besides the many duties required from a mother of a large family and farmer's wife, Martha also had the additional duties of an innkeeper's wife over a ten year period when Taber operated inns and hotels at Monterey and Green Springs, California.
