Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. Born in County Tyrone, Ireland, he relocated to New York and with the advent of the Civil War joined the Union Army as a Private and later was a Captain in command of Company B, 69th New York Infantry. During the Battle at Malvern Hill, Virginia, on July 1, 1862, Captain Rafferty was wounded and directed to the rear. He declined to go, continued to fight in the action and received several additional wounds. Being captured by the Confederates, when he was released had total disability for any further military service. For most distinguished gallantry, he was awarded the Medal of Honor on August 2, 1897. He died in New York City at age 64.
