ELMER O. JONES
---Elmer O. Jones, widely known lawyer and many years a resident of La Plata, died Tuesday morning, April 27, at Marceline, Missouri of a heart ailment with which he had been afflicted for almost a year. At the time of his death he was at the home of his mother.
---He was born in New Boston, Linn County, Missouri October 19, 1881. His parents were John M. Jones, now deceased, and Frances M. Jones of Marceline.
---He was educated in the public schools of Linn County, the Kirksville Normal School (Now the Northeast Missouri State Teachers College), at Kirksville, the University of Missouri at Columbia and the University of Wisconsin at Madison. At the Normal School wehre he was awarded a Bachelors Degree in Pedagory, he won a scholorship in Political Science. At the University of Missouri where he was awarded both A. B. and H. B. Cumlaude Degrees, he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, the highest academic honor bestowed upon university students and was given the Rollins Scholorship in the School of Arts & Science. In addition, the university of Missouri Law School elected him a member of the Order of the Colf, the highest scholastic distinction which can be conferred upon a law student. He was a member of the Phi Delta Phi Law Fraternity.
---At one time he was Superintendent of Schools in Kirksville.
---Mr. Jones began the practice of law at Kirksville in 1913 but in 1915 he move to La Plata where he practiced until 1935 when he served successfully as Assistant Attorney General of the United States Council for the H. O. L. C. and State Council for the F. H. A.
---He served as Representative from Macon County in the 1919 and 1931 sessions of the Missouri General Assembly. In 1924 and 1928 he was nominated by the Democratic Party for the office of Attorney General of Missouri. He was defeated both times in the general election although he ran near the head of the ticket each time.
---He was once General Council for the Modern Woodmen and he was the founder of the young Jefferson Democratic Club of Missouri which he served as President for several years. He was a member of the La Plata Christian Church. In the past several months Mr. Jones had been practicing law in Marceline, having opened an office in the Jones Building.
---A brother and sister, Dr. H. V. Jones and Mrs. W. W. Ellis live in Marceline and a son, Robert H. Jones, is General Council for a corporate group in St. Louis. Another son, Lt. J. B. Jones, is a Medical Doctor in the United States Navy, now stationed in Camp Park, California.
---The funeral will be held Friday afternoon at 2:00 in the McLaughlin Chapel in Marceline and the burial will be in the La Plata cemetery.
