Heinrich Christian Wilhelm Gehrke was born in Osnabruck, Hannover, Germany to Heinrich Hennig Christian Gehrke and his wife Anna Margarette Wilhelmine Grabenstein. Wilhelm came to the United States as a crew member of Ship Adolphine which arrived in Baltimore September 1864. While on the ship he meet his future wife, Anna Theophel. Wilhelm joined the US Army, 6th Cavalry Company M a week after arriving in the United States. Wilhelm was a brick layer. He and Anna had 3 children in addition to Harry: Rosa who married James McCoy, Annie Lizzie who died young, and a third unknown child.
