HASTINGS--Daniel H. Hastings, of Salisbury, Md., father of Judge Daniel O. Hastings, of this city, died suddenly Tuesday afternoon, May 25, 1920, at his home on Camden avenue, in Salisbury, aged 81 years. He was a retired farmer and remarkably active for a man of his advanced age. He had visited the home of his boyhood as late as Sunday last, where be took a keen delight the time spent with some of the remaining schoolmates of his youth. Mr. Hastings was born at Parsonsburg, Wicomico county, in 1839. He was one of a large and well-known family and two brothers, Mr. Levin Hastings and Mr. Joseph Hastings, both of Parsonsburg, survive. He is also survived by five children and twelve grandchildren: Mrs. H. Frank Powell, Pennsgrove, N. J., Mrs. Thomas H. Pusey and Laurence R. Hastings, of this city, Judge Daniel O. Hastings and Walter G. Hastings, of Wilmington, also an adopted son, Fred J. Harding, of California. In 1862 Mr. Hastings was married to Miss Amelia Ellen Parsons, daughter of Mr. Patrick Parsons of Pittsville. Mrs. Hastings died in August 1914. For several years Mr. Hastings was engaged in farming near Princess Anne, Somerset County. He was a staunch Democrat and an earnest party worker but had never aspired to office. In early life Mr. Hastings became a member of the Methodist Protestant Church and was very active in his church affiliations both in Somerset county and later when he became a resident of this city. It was on the 70th anniversary of his birthday that he joined Bethesda M. P. Church, of Salisbury. Funeral services, held at his home on Camden avenue, Friday afternoon, was conducted by Rev. D. W. Anstine of Vienna, who was pastor 37 years ago of the church in Somerset county where Mr. Hastings held his membership. Interment was in Parson cemetery. The pall bearers were: W. E. Sheppard, Dean W. Purdue, John H. White, W. P. Ward, E. J. C. Parsons and E. W. Windsor. The funeral was largely attended, among those from out of town being Col. J. T. Layfield and Mrs. Thomas W. Jakes of Wilmington; Judge and Mrs. Daniel O. Hastings and children, Mr. and Mrs. Walter G. Hastings, Mr. and Mrs. Wallace M. Powell of Wilmington, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer F. Powell of New York City, Miss Evangeline Powell, of Western Maryland College and Edgar Hastings of Fruitland.
