Age: 65
Civil War Veteran
Residence: Wells, Maine
Service Record:
Enlisted as a Private on 30 September 1862 at the age of 26
Enlisted in Company E, 27th Infantry Regiment Maine on 30 September 1862.
Mustered out Company E, 27th Infantry Regiment Maine on 17 July 1863 in Portland, ME

Please note the infromation below about what is obviously an error on this man's grave stone:

Years ago (within the last 10 or so, I believe), when the Ocean View Cemetery Association ordered many veteran stones, two of them showed up with errors: Samuel S Smith of the 27th Maine and Daniel Rankin of the 8th Maine both had CSA engraved on their stones, the stones themselves being the Confederate veteran design. How exactly a mistake could have been made by whatever company supplied these is beyond me! A few years back, someone contacted this Association and was told that previous board members did not know what to do with these erred stones, and just had them erected anyways. I was told they were going to be replaced but, as of last Fall, they had not yet been.

I need to contact this cemetery association and ask them about the status of these replacements. Perhaps they are waiting on new stones, I don't know. Personally, I would at least sand blast the CSA and southern cross from their stones if there is a problem getting new stones.

Sincerely,

Steve Dow
