Born Blandford, Mass., 23 Nov 1831. Fifth generation preacher and second generation Adventist preacher, originally Methodist. Writer of popular tracts: Future Punishment; Intermediate State; Destiny of the Wicked, etc. Major work: Pauline Theology, or, The Christian Doctrine of Future Punishment. In 1860 elected President of the Christian Publication Society and the Christian Association. His motto: "No creed but the Bible, no master but Christ, no name but Christian." Resigned the position when the name Advent Christian was adopted. In 1865 established the Scriptural Tract Repository, Boston and published a monthly, The Christian, with ultimately a circulation of 35,000. A special interest: Christian evidences and his Anti-infidel literature. Wrote The Inspiration of the Bible, or, Will the Old Book Stand? Nearly three million copies produced up to 1898 and translated into eighteen languages. Poet and producer of hymnals. Supported his wife's ministry in the South following the Civil War. Died Goshen, Mass., 21 Oct 1899.
