George was born in Germany (Prussia) to Johann Carl Phillip Huether & Martha Johanna Sigmann. He Immigrated to the United States in 1857.
George served 2 stints with the Union Army during the Civil War. 1st was with Company "G", 14th Illinois Infantry from 25 May 1861 to 18 Jun 1864. He re-enlisted with Company "E" 43rd Illinois Infantry from 21 Sep 1864 to 7 Jul 1865. His records indicate he suffered a bayonet wound to the left forearm during the war. He attained the rank of Corporal.
George married Anna Maria Josephine Tiemann on 30 Jan 1866 in Alton, Madison County, Illinois. In the 1900 & 1910 U.S. Census, next to Anna's name, it states that they had 9 children of which 6 survived. Records have only been found for 7 of them.
On 23 Jan 1897, George became a naturalized citizen.
