US Congressman, US Senator. Elected to represent Virginia in the United States House of Representatives to fil the vacacny caused by the resignation of Congressman James Pleasants, He served from 1820 to 1835, having represented two different Districts (17th District from 1820 to 1821, then the 3rd District from 1821 to 1835). In 1834 he ran for reelection, but was defeated by Congressman Nathaniel H. Clairborne. In 18410 he was elected as a Senator from Virginai to the United States Senate, serving from 1841 to 1847.
