Rebecca Jane Smith, daughter of Joel Haden Smith and Minerva Frances Maxwell, was born in Cedar county, Missouri, at the height of the Civil War. She married James Shaw in that county on 20 December 1879. They had 2 children, Charles, who died in infancy, and Minnie Mae. Widowed in 1884, Rebecca married Robert C. Ainsworth 25 December 1887. They had 5 children, Mary Frances, Robert Sterling, Bertha Jane, Joel Haden and Evelyn. Rebecca was widowed again in 1927 and lived about another 20 years. She died at the home of her daughter, Evelyn Powell in Neodesha, Kansas.
