He ran away from home and enlisted in the US Army without his father's consent and changed his name to 'Bradley L.' He was mustered on March 12, 1862 in Augusta, ME as a private in Company E, 11th Regiment ME Infantry. He participated in the Peninsula Campaign with the Army of the Potomac and fought through all of its campaigns through December 1862. His regiment was transferred to the Department of the South. On July 20, 1863, an artillery detachment of 40 enlisted men from the 11th ME were detailed from Fernandina, FL to Morris Island, SC to man the 'Marsh Battery', otherwise known as the Swamp Angel detail. The Swamp Angel is the name given to an 8" Parrott rifle that fired a 200 lb. shell. For his role in saving lives of comrades when the Swamp Angel burst on August 23, 1863, Bradley was awarded the Gillmore Medal for gallant and meritorious service. He was mortally wounded on December 8, 1863 by the explosion of a Confederate cannon shell fired on Battery Chatfield, Morris Island, SC.
