He was born on January 5, 1944 in Martinsville, Indiana to the late Jay Marsh Smith and Mildred D. (Dow) Smith.
Bob had moved to Indianapolis 11 years ago from Martinsville, where he had spent most all of his life. He was a graduate of Martinsville High School with the class of 1962 and received an associate degree from Traphagen School of Design in New York City in 1966. He also served with the Indiana National Guard from 1967-1971.
Bob worked in office furniture sales and design for over thirty years. His first job was in the former L.S. Ayres in the drapery department, which led to his interest in design. He later went to work at Brass Office Products in Indianapolis for many years and retired in 2005 from Paper Service of Indianapolis.
He was a member of the Faith Missionary Church in Martinsville and was baptized in 1958 at the Paragon Christian Church, as a result of a Billy Graham convocation. He was a former member of the Paragon Lions Club, Indianapolis Jaycees and the Men for Missions in Indianapolis. He enjoyed collecting family memorabilia, fishing, college football and IU basketball.
He will be sadly missed by his family and friends including two sons, Matthew (Sarah) Smith of Tacoma, WA and Preston Smith of Indianapolis; two sisters, Sue (Larry) Murrell of Kokomo, IN and Bonnie (Jim) Tackett of Naples, FL; former wife, Sharon L. Smith of Indianapolis; and three grandchildren, Elliot, Gideon and Alexus Smith.
Family and friends are encouraged to visit on Sunday, March 6th from 2-5:00 PM at Neal & Summers Funeral and Cremation Center. Rev. Steve Adams will conduct a service celebrating Bob's life on Monday at 1:00 PM at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Friendship Park Cemetery in Paragon.
