DELAVAN—George Pope, 76, nationally known Holstein breeder, died Tuesday at Mercy hospital, Janesville. He lived at 503 Racine Street here. Mr. Pope was a pioneer in the Holstein-Friesian association.
He had served as director of the state association and was president of the Walworth County association.
He exhibited cattle in many parts of the country and had shipped them to Argentina. Known as a fine baseball player in his youth at one time Mr. Pope was offered a contract by Connie Mack of the Philadelphia Athletics, but he refused the job to continue farming. He was a member of the board of trustees of the Walworth county hospital and home and served as a director of the Walworth County Agricultural society, being prominent in directing activities of the
Walworth County fair.
Mr. Pope was born May 30, 1876, in Ireland and came to this
country at the age of 8. He spent most of his life on farms in Walworth and Darien townships. He was married to Elizabeth Campbell on June 19, 1905. He was a member of St. Andrew's Catholic church and Knights of Columbus. Surviving are his wife two sisters, Mrs. Susie Febry and Mrs. Mary Dooley, both of Delavan, and a brother, James, of Modesto, Cal. The funeral will.be at 9:30 a. m. Friday in St. Andrew's Catholic
church with burial in the 'church cemetery. The rosary will be said at 8 p. m. Thursday in the O'Brien and Betzer funeral home. Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p m. Thursday
