Former Mayor Ernest Lackey, 74 who twice headed Paducah's government, died at 7 a.m. today at his residence, 232 Friedman avenue, following a brief illness.

Mr. Lackey had been in good health until three or four days ago and the end came unexpectedly for his family and many friends.

Mr. Lackey's death was the result of a stroke, the family physician said. He had suffered a light stroke Tuesday night.

Father of present Mayor Pierce E. Lackey, Mr. Lackey was the only Paducah mayor to have a son follow him in that office. Mr. Lackey took office in January, 1916, as Paducah's 11th mayor. The election, however, was contested by the defeated condidate, Frank N. Burns, now deceased, who took the case to the Court of Appeals. The court, in June 1916, decreed against the election, but appointed Mr. Lackey to serve until the November, 1916, election.

In his incumbency of less that a year, Mr. Lackey's administration motorized the fire department, established a home for unfortunates on South Second, let a contract for paving of Broadway from First to Fifth, and also let a contract for the paving of Jefferson from Ninth to Seventeenth.

He became the city's 14th mayor in 1928, serving for four years, an administration that saw purchase by the city of the water works, much paving and sewer work done in the West End.

The West End residential section was also opened and developed to a great extent during Mr. Lackey's second term.

The city hall flag was placed at half staff in honor of the former mayor.

In 1906 and 1907 he represented the Fourth Ward as councilman, and was alderman from 1908 to 1915. He was chosen president of the council chamber and was later made president of the aldermanic board for four years.

Mr. Lackey was born in Paducah June 8, 1867, the son of Dr. George W. and Mary Josephine Lackey. He attended Paducah public schools and early in life was a salesman for the Hecht Brothers clothing firm.

On September 10, 1889, Mr. Lackey married Miss Caroline Kreutzer of Paduch. In 1910, he with Al Foreman, established the Foreman and Lackey insurance agency, in which he was active until his death.

Mr. Lackey was a life member of the Masonic lodge No. 127, F. & A. M., a charter member of the T.P. A. organization, and a member of the Elks club.

He is survived by his wife; seven sons, Brian, Ezzelle, Mayor Pierce, and Prewitt of Paducah; Herndon Lackey of Oklahoma City, Hecht and Ernest Lackey, Jr., of Hopkinsville, both formerly of Paducah; two sisters, Mrs. Lander J. Chisholm of Earlington, and Mrs. Ralph Dudley of Sturgis; two brothers, Dr. Walter Lackey of Oklahoma City, and George E. Lackey, of Detroit.

He also leaves 11 grandchildren, Mrs. Crawford Bennett, the former Frances Lackey, of Oklahoma City, Mrs. William Karnes, the former Virginia Lackey, of Fort Sill, Okla.; Paul Joe Lackey, Mrs. Potter Smith, who was the former Charlotte Lackey, Edwin Lackey, Mary Bayne Lackey, a student of the University of Kentucky, Jane Rivers Lackey, Charles Prewitt Lackey, Sue Hampton Lackey, and Sherry Lackey and four great-grandchildren.

The Christian Science service will be held at Roth Chapel at 3:30 p.m. Sunday. Burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery. The body will be at Roth chapel until the funeral hour.
