The flag in the photo to the right is the official flag of the "Rough and Ready Guards," a cavalry unit composed largely of volunteers from the Canoochee and surrounding area. The regiment was organized in June 1861. Dr. Caleb Lenzie Sample was commissioned its captain. It is not known if this unit ever saw action during the war. In fact, it may have been disbanded by late 1861, since some of the original members are known to have enlisted in other units.

The flag was made by Miss Lavinia Marietta Cobb Lane, and presented it to the regiment in a ceremony held at the home of Lott Barwick on July 4, 1861. Lavinia was the daughter of Benjamin L. and Mary Ann Johnson Lane. The reverse side of the flag reads "Extermination Rather Than Subjugation." James A. Rountree, a member of the "Rough and Ready Guards," 1st Sergeant, and later Brevet Lieutenant of Co F, Cobb's Legion, GA Cavalry, married Miss Lane following the war.
