Lawrence C. Sliefert, age 91, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Friday, April 18, 2008 Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.
Lawrence C. Sliefert, the son of Frederick (Fred) and Hattie (Smith) Sliefert, was born on the farm in Washington Township, Buena Vista County, Iowa, on June 8, 1916. He was the sixth of seven children. His early years were spent living and working on the Sliefert farm. His father died when he was 10 years old. The boys continued to farm for several years after Fred's death. The family then moved into Storm Lake where Lawrence attended Storm Lake Community School. As a young man, Lawrence worked as a hired man on various farms in the area and later for Nash Brothers Meat Packing of Storm Lake.
Lawrence was united in marriage to Helen Imlay on August 21, 1942, at the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake. Three daughters were born to this union: Maxine, Linda, and Nancy. Lawrence lived in the Storm Lake area his entire life. Following his employment with Nash Brothers, he began working full time for Kingan and Company in 1941. This company later became Hygrade Foods, Inc. and Lawrence retired when Hygrade closed their plant in 1981. During his many years at the packing plant, he worked at various jobs, but most of his employment was in the maintenance department. He was a member of the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, Local #191.
Lawrence was a member of the Storm Lake United Methodist Church, the Independent Order of the Odd Fellows (IOOF) and the Izaac Walton League. In his retirement years, Lawrence enjoyed fishing, traveling, spending time with family and friends and going for coffee.
Those who will always cherish his memory include his wife of 65 years, Helen, of Storm Lake: three daughters: Maxine Sliefert of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Linda Sliefert of Muscatine, Iowa; and Nancy Sliefert of Storm Lake; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Hattie; his brothers: Alvin, Carl, and Walter; and his sisters: Mildred Shannon, Ethel Weiland, and Marion Sliefert.
Memorial services for Mr. Sliefert were held on Monday, April 21, 2008, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake. Committal services were at Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery (aka Storm Lake Memorial Cemetery) in Storm Lake, at 9:30 a.m. that morning prior to the memorial service.
Visitation was held on Sunday, April 20, 2008, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake, with the family present during that time. The Sliefert Funeral Home of Storm Lake was in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, a fund in Lawrence's memory has been established at the Storm Lake United Methodist Church.
