George W. Beal was born 20 June 1844 in Smith county Tennessee, son of John B. and Elizabeth A. (McKinnis) Beal. George was a veteran of the Civil War enlisting when he was 17 years of age. He rose in rank from Private to 5th Sergeant in Company A, Tennessee 8 Infantry, CSA. He was wounded at the Battle of Peachtree Creek, having been shot through the elbow necessitating the amputation of his right arm. George received a pension for his service and sacrifice
