MARY ARABELLE SPAIN CARAWAN was the daughter of Joshua Lacy Spain, Jr. and Nancy Stowe Spain, daughter of Bond Stowe and Ellen Swindell Stowe, was born in Lowland, N.C. and died in Chesapeake, Va.

Arabelle Carawan was orphaned young and life was not easy after she lost both parents. She was known as a devoted wife and mother, and a good neighbor. She was a hard worker, in the home and in the field, and sold pecans and eggs to purchase household necessities. She sewed, knitted, and crocheted and her biscuits are remembered for being the best and biggest. She expected her children to practice good behavior, young or old, and was highly regarded by her children's spouses. Interestingly, at times she felt it necessary to "take the side of a daughter in law" her son would become well aware of his mother's opinion of his behavior. Although her demeanor sometimes appeared to be forbidding, she enjoyed lively conversation as well as playing games. She also enjoyed reading, watching TV, visiting her niece, Mae Swanner, in Washington, NC, as well as family members in Pamlico County, where she was always welcomed. The loss of two sons and a grandson in the prime of their lives was very difficult for her. When she was no longer able to live alone she moved in with Rona and Rena and hopefully recovered some of the childhood missed with no responsibility, no groceries to buy, no problems to solve, no work to be done, her first Easter basket, a Christmas tree for her room, and loving care and attention. God has a way of balancing things.
