He served in the Navy in WWII. He was stationed in the Pacific on the Florida Islands (Halavo) about 20 miles North of Guadalcanal. He flew in PBYs about 2 x/week. The mission was to pick up American pilots who had been shot down over the Pacific. While on the base he monitored radio transmissions. He was an AO1 - Aviation Ordnanceman.
He married Elaine Margaret Hogg on November 11, 1946 in a farm house on the Loop Road, 4 miles outside Stanfield, Oregon. Initially he was a farmer, but soon began working as a civilian with the U.S. Army supervising the storage of ammunition. For many years he and his family lived in France and after that in Joliet, Illinois. He also did two tours of duty in Viet Nam.
Bill and Elaine had five children: Frank, Phyllis, Samijean, Bill and Rick. He retired in Roseburg, Oregon. Bill loved to fish and enjoyed following current events. He was highly intelligent and had an extraordinary memory.
