Sadie Berman Jerry, 90, passed away on July 24, 2010 at her home in Green Bay, WI after a brief illness. She was born in Green Bay on Nov. 24, 1919 and married Norris Jerry in 1941. Sadie was preceded in death by her parents, Anna (Adler) and William Berman; four sisters, Ruth (Bensman), Ella (Barnes), Mary Berman and Arleen (Swerdlow). She is survived by her son, Rick (Kathy) Jerry, Green Bay; many nieces and nephews and Sunni, her current pet dog. A talented musician, Sadie began her piano studies at the age of four and played her first recital at five. Several years later she was accepted as a student by Irma Schenuit Hall, Milwaukee concert pianist, with whom she studied while also attending Milwaukee State Teachers College (now UW-M). Sadie opened a private studio with the assistance of young teachers she trained. For many years she divided her time between her studio and St. Norbert College where she was a member of the faculty. She was active as an accompanist and performed extensively as such for many years. She taught piano and organ for over 70 years and it was not uncommon for her to have taught several generations of students within one family. More than a piano teacher, Sadie helped her students with life lessons. As a result, it was not unusual for former students to visit her when returning to Green Bay or to come up to her in the store decades later to thank her. Special students of hers were Herb Adderly and Lionel Aldrich of the 1960's Packers. They were encouraged to take piano lessons by Coach Lombardi in order to improve their dexterity with the football. An early supporter of the Green Bay Packers, in the 1950's she was a founding member of the Women's Quarterback Club, along with her sister, Arleen, and best friend, Lois Kerin. During her teaching career she served as adjudicator for many auditions and competitions in Wisconsin and Illinois and first judged for the National Guild in 1947. Beside the National Guild of Piano Teachers, she also judged for the Wisconsin Federation of Music Clubs and many Wisconsin State High School Music Festivals and lectured to groups of piano teachers including the Northeast Wisconsin Music Teachers Forum. In 1960 she judged the first Green Bay Symphony Young Artists Concerto Competition. Sadie was also the official pianist for the Green Bay Symphony for many years and performed on harp, harpsichord and Celeste in addition in that capacity. For several decades, beginning in the late 1950s, Sadie was the anchor, arranger and pianist of the "Moderne String Trio" of Green Bay. She was the official pianist from auditions through rehearsals and performances of "Music Theatre Green Bay" for over 25 years. Sadie also performed many two-piano recitals. She was a long-time member of Green Bay Musicians Local 205 and Green Bay Rebekah Lodge 185. A great cook and avid seamstress she was famous for her spicy chili, liver paté and the 900 dog coats she sewed for the local canine population. A celebration of Sadie's life will be held Wednesday, July 28, 2010 at Proko-Wall Funeral Home in Green Bay. Visitation begins at 11:00 a.m., services at 2:00 p.m. with Rabbi Shaina Bacharach officiating. Upon conclusion, graveside services will be held at Fort Howard Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations to Unity Hospice or Happily Ever After Animal Sanctuary in Marion, WI would be appreciated. The family would like to express their gratitude to Unity Hospice, and friends, Jean Jacky, Judy Poh, B.J. Goral, Carmen Youra and Marshall and Elaine Moss for their wonderful assistance during her short illness.
